Iran defies UN nuclear resolution

UNITED NATIONS, Feb. 22 (UPI) -- Iran has failed to comply with U.N. Security Council demands to stop its nuclear program, the International Atomic Energy Agency said.

The country continues to enrich uranium and "has not agreed to any of the required transparency measures," the IAEA report said, a copy of which was obtained by United Press International Thursday.

In December, the Security Council passed a resolution calling for Iran to stop all enrichment activities and all nuclear-related construction projects in order to convince the world its nuclear program was only for peaceful purposes, but the IAEA report said these activities continue.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in Vienna Thursday said he urged the Iranian government to comply with the Security Council as soon as possible.

"It's clear that Iran is still in non-compliance of Security Council Resolutions and IAEA guidelines," U.S. Ambassador Jackie Sanders told reporters after closed-door Security Council meeting. "I think it's clear that they have ignored the last resolution and we have to ratchet it up."

Slovakian Ambassador Peter Burian, president of the Security Council for February, said no decision has been made about when the council will discuss Iran's non compliance.

"We will be checking the mood and the interests of the members to deal with the matters next week," said Burian. "This will be a matter for the members of the council to decide."
