Gunmen attack security forces in Gaza

GAZA, June 6 (UPI) -- Gunmen believed to be pro-Hamas fired mortars at the headquarters of the preventive security agency in Gaza city injuring six people.

The incident, which coincided with the end of a fruitless internal Palestinian dialogue between Hamas and Fatah, is bound to further intensify tensions between the two powerful groups.

Security sources said the gunmen fired three mortars at the headquarters and clashed with security forces before fleeing. Six people, including two members of the security agency, were wounded, one of them gravely.

A commander of the preventive security forces, Youssef Issa, said the agency knows by name the assailants, but refused to accuse any party.

However, he held Hamas responsible for the incident, blamed on the "provocations and incitement" exercised by the Islamic militant group against the agency and its members.

"The agency knows very well who carried out the attack and will place all information and testimonies and proofs before Interior Minister Said Siyam so that justice be implemented," Issa said.

He also called on the interior minister of the Hamas-led Palestinian government to assume his full responsibilities, stressing that the preemptive security agency is awaiting a full and thorough investigation.

Issa also stressed that the agency will take the necessary measures to protect its headquarters and members.
