India spectrum policy possible at year end

NEW DELHI, June 8 (UPI) -- India's telecom industry will probably have to wait until at least the end of the year for the government's new spectrum policy.

The Department of Telecom acknowledged this week that it could take an additional six months to put together a plan to allocate new spectrum to commercial wireless carriers.

The spectrum is needed for the expansion of third-generation wireless service in the robust Indian wireless market, but much of the bandwidth is currently reserved for defense agencies.

The delay will likely further rankle wireless companies eager to move ahead with service expansion.

But Press Trust India said Thursday that the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India was still looking at pricing and allocation issues and had yet to start the consultation process.
