WORLDSPACE to uplink from Dubai station

SILVER SPRING, Md., May 31 (UPI) -- U.S. satellite radio provider WORLDSPACE is building an uplink facility in Dubai.

The Maryland company, which provides satellite-based digital radio service to international markets, struck a deal with Sama Communications for the facility that will uplink WORLDSPACE's AsiaStar and AfriStar satellites.

Chief Operating Officer Alexander Brown said in a news release Wednesday that handling two satellites from one location would streamline operations and keep backhaul and other operating costs down.

"The visibility from this geography provides nearly global coverage and brings WORLDSPACE's uplink closer to important content providers and the region's production facilities," Brown explained.

The uplink station will be integrated with Sama's Dubai infrastructure and will be operated and maintained by Sama techs.
