Golden Telecom completes Russia network

MOSCOW, May 24 (UPI) -- Golden Telecom has completed deployment of its Russian Federal Transit Network for long-distance and international voice and data service.

A news release said Wednesday the move significantly expands Golden's Russia footprint and connects the company to a potential long-distance market of 32 million residential and 8 million business customers.

The FTN is based on Nortel Multiservice Switch 7400 devices to connect four international communication transit nodes, seven intercity transit nodes and 88 access nodes.

The network allows more-efficient routing of calls and transmissions, which will lower leasing costs to regional operators. Golden had been providing service to operators directly connected to its nine city-wide digital networks.

"Nortel's work on the Federal Transit Network is designed to help make it simpler and more affordable for Russia's regional operators to provide more people with long-distance and international telephone services," observed Nortel Russia President Sorin Lupu.
