BellSouth prepares for hurricane season

ATLANTA, May 24 (UPI) -- BellSouth is preparing for the upcoming U.S. hurricane season, particularly to provide power to networks should commercial power be lost.

The carrier said it will increase its supply of power generators, with some facilities having permanent generators fueled by natural gas that do not require refueling.

It is also preparing for floods by locating switches and generators on upper floors of buildings, as well as elevating low-lying key distribution facilities.

At the same time, the company said consumers themselves should also be prepared for telecommunications emergencies, such as having a traditional wireline phone with a corded handset in case the power goes out.
