MSV accelerates telecom satellite schedule

RESTON, Va., May 24 (UPI) -- Mobile Satellite Ventures reached an agreement with Boeing to accelerate deployment of two new telecom satellites for the North America wireless market.

The Virginia company and its joint-venture partner, MSV Canada, plan to launch the L-band spacecraft at the end of the decade for use as the backbone of its planned satellite-wireless communications network.

The agreement moves the launches up about eight months to mid-2009 for the U.S. satellite and early 2010 for the Canadian satellite. They will be followed later by a satellite for South America.

"Our decision to amend the agreement reflects a need in the marketplace to focus on North America as a priority in launching an advanced ubiquitous network solution," said MSV Chief Executive Officer Alexander Good, who added the agreement "reflects a better return on our investment."

Once deployed, the satellites will replace the current MSAT satellite system operated by MSV.
