U.S. military orders Comtech field modems

ORLANDO, Fla., May 23 (UPI) -- Comtech Systems has received a $9.7 million contract from the U.S. military for 61 digital troposcatter modem kits for microwave data transmission.

The kits will be used to upgrade military AN/TRC-170 terminals, which use over-the-horizon microwave technology to send 16 megabits per second under field conditions without relying on satellites.

The upgrades will also allow applications such as color video transmission.

Comtech Systems, a Florida subsidiary of Comtech Telecommunications, said the Defense Department contract included an option for another 123 modem kits worth more than $18 million that was expected to be exercised by the end of July.
