UpSNAP provides cell-phone emergency alert

DAVIDSON, N.C., May 23 (UPI) -- Mobile content provider UpSNAP Tuesday launched a service that will provide automatic emergency alerts for U.S. cell-phone users.

The North Carolina company's service will relay timely information to cell phones on disasters, terrorist incidents and even health threats such as the bird flu.

"Hurricane Katrina, terrorism, and health concerns like bird flu and mumps outbreak have elevated the public's demand to stay informed," said Chief Executive Officer Tony Philipp. "Our homeland security alerts service ensures that consumers will receive audio updates on critical issues."

UpSNAP said the alerts will be issued around the clock from sources including the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Department of Homeland Security and the Centers for Disease Control.
