India's April teledensity tops 13 percent

NEW DELHI, May 11 (UPI) -- India's national teledensity grew to 13.16 percent in April with the addition of 4.6 million customers.

The figure compares to 12.73 percent teledensity in March of 2005, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India announced Thursday.

Teledensity refers to the number of phone lines per 100 people.

The agency pegged the total number of phone subscribers in India at about 144 million, with 97 million mobile subscribers and 47.5 million fixed-line subscribers.

Nearly 4 million new mobile subscriptions were added in April, along with 730,000 fixed lines.
