The list, due on newsstands Monday in Red Herring's "Europe's Best" issue, is compiled using criteria such as business model, technology, quality, management and innovation, according to the report.

"Innovation and creativity are the catchwords in this year's Red Herring list of the top 100 private companies in Europe," the magazine promised on its Web site.

The United Kingdom was the country with the largest number of companies to make the list, with 28, followed by France and Israel.

Red Herring said communications and Internet companies "made up a large percentage of the group."

The magazine is slated to present the awards Monday and Tuesday in Paris, the Globes report said.
