MTN's high hopes for Iran telecom market

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, May 8 (UPI) -- South Africa's MTN has ambitions to expand operations in Iran, the carrier's chief executive said in an interview with the Financial Times Monday.

Phuthuma Nhleko said that the company has seconded one of its executives, Jyoti Desai, as chief operating officer of MTN Irancell, of which it has a 49 percent stake.

"Our view is that we are there to do business -- to roll out a network -- and whatever the challenges are, we hope they will be resolved favourably," Nhleko said. "Our job is to be a mobile operator that delivers infrastructure service, not to try to second-guess the politicians."

He added that Irancell was a "key investment," pointing out that he travels at least once a month to Tehran, where he sits on Irancell's board as its vice chairman.
