Gateway links Africa wireless nets

SAN JOSE, Calif., May 4 (UPI) -- Gateway Communications has finished deploying a Veraz VoIP solution that will enable Gateway to link wireless networks in Africa to Europe.

Veraz said in a news release Thursday that work replaces Gateway's previous Nortel TDM switch and allows Gateway to convert mobile traffic to Voice over Internet Protocol format that can be transmitted by satellite to its gateway in Belgium.

The process allows Gateway to eliminate the need to backhaul calls through Europe and makes better use of Africa's legacy wireless networks.

"Gateway now has the largest and most advanced network in Africa, delivering significant savings to our customers through intelligent switching and compression technology supplied by Veraz," said Gateway Chief Executive Officer Peter Gbedemah.

The solution used is the Veraz Controlswitch, a programmable softswitch delivery platform, along with I-Gate 4000 PRO media gateways deployed in Gateway's own African network and those of their customers.

Veraz is a San Jose, Calif., telecom-switch manufacturer.
