Michael Dell urges global IT expansion

AUSTIN, Texas, May 4 (UPI) -- Dell founder Michael Dell Thursday called for a worldwide emphasis on expanding information technology as a means of advancing human progress.

In his keynote address to the World Congress on Information Technology, Dell said opening markets to IT products would give consumers more choices at lower prices and stimulate overall economic investment.

"While information technology has sparked extraordinary economic and human progress in recent years, it's also true that its potential is only beginning to be met and in many countries, its promise has gone unfulfilled," said Dell.

Dell said world governments could assist IT growth by bolstering technical education and establishing regulatory environments that were friendly to investment and the construction of infrastructure.

Dell would likely play a major role in such a brave new world since his company is a world leader in computer sales.

The World Congress on IT is being held in Austin, Texas, and has drawn some 2,000 delegates from business, government and academia interested in various aspects of IT.
