KAMPALA, Uganda, May 2 (UPI) -- Uganda is in no hurry to overhaul its telecom policy despite pressure from the industry and potential investors.
The Monitor reported from Kampala late Monday that Communications Commissioner Godfrey Kibuka asked for patience and reassured that the draft of the new policy would be released sometime this year.
The current policy launched in 1996 expired last summer, and the deadline for a new regulatory package was last August.
Critics have grumbled that the delay favored MTN and UTL, the only two companies licensed as national operators in Uganda.
However, Kibuka has pointed out that the African nation has a relatively small telecom market with a low return rate on investments. The government has worried about under-funded companies being unable to roll out complete services.
"We cannot afford to have 100 companies in our telecom market," he said.
