Study finds silk clothing does not improve eczema in children

By Amy Wallace

April 11 (UPI) -- A new study by the University of Nottingham in England found that silk clothing did not provide any significant improvement in eczema symptoms in children.

Researchers at the University of Nottingham studied 300 children age 1 to 15 with moderate to severe eczema from a range of urban and rural settings in the UK for six months. The children were randomly divided into two groups -- half received standard care, and the other half received standard care plus wore silk garments believed to be beneficial for patients with eczema.

The study found no significant difference in the severity of eczema and no difference in quality of life or medication use between the group wearing the silk garments and the group that did not.

"The results of this trial suggest that silk garments are unlikely to provide additional clinical or economic benefits over standard care for children with moderate to severe eczema," researchers wrote in the study, which is published in PLOS Medicine.
