ATLANTA, Sept. 18 (UPI) -- In an effort to help save Americans' expanding waistlines, 16 companies pledged to cut the number of calories in their food and drinks.
As part of that promise, high-profile companies like General Mills, Kraft Foods, Pepsi and Coke chopped 6.4 trillion calories from their products between 2007 and 2012.

The original promise had been to cut 1 trillion calories.
That breaks down to about 78 calories per person per day.
However, not everyone takes these numbers at face value.
One report notes that the study began right as the recession began, so people weren't spending outrageously anyway.
According to the CDC, during the same period of calorie decline, obesity rates among actually increased from 34 to 35 percent.
