Americans no more familiar with 'Obamacare' today than in August

WASHINGTON, Feb. 9 (UPI) -- Nearly 1-in-3 U.S. adults say they are not too or not at all familiar with the Affordable Care Act -- the same number as last August, a survey indicates.

A Gallup poll, conducted Jan. 31 to Feb. 1, found 68 percent are very or somewhat familiar with the law, while a third of the country is not too or not at all familiar. Gallup finds nearly identical familiarity numbers last August.

Despite their general opposition to the law, Republicans are significantly more likely to say they are familiar with the law than are independents or Democrats.

Seventy-eight of Republicans say they have some degree of familiarity with the legislation, while 64 percent of Democrats say they have a similar level of knowledge.

Nearly six-in-10 Americans, who say they are very or somewhat familiar with the law disapprove of it, but those not too or not at all familiar with the law are more divided -- 44 percent of this group approve, 35 percent disapprove, with 23 percent unsure.

This watershed legislation, which will change the face of the U.S. healthcare system, for better or worse, remains somewhat of a mystery for a significant portion of the nation, Gallup said.

The Gallup Daily tracking survey, with a random sample of 1,017 adults, has a margin of error of 4 percentage points.
