British train operators ban use of e-cigarettes

LONDON, Aug. 11 (UPI) -- Train operators in Britain say they have banned the use of e-cigarettes by passengers because the devices can make others feel uneasy.

Train operators C2C, Greater Anglia and First Capital Connect said the 1.5 million Britons who use the devices may not do so on their carriers because they said some still expel nicotine, The Daily Telegraph reported Sunday.

"In common with other train operators we have recently taken the decision to include cigarettes in the smoking ban on our trains and stations," said a Greater Anglia spokesman. "This decision is in line with the British Medical Association's recommendation that e-cigarettes should be included in the ban on smoking in public places."

Amanda Standford, a spokeswoman for anti-smoking group ASH, said the ban is "unhelpful" for those trying to kick smoking by using the electronic devices.

Transport for London said last week it is considering banning e-cigarettes on board its trains in the capital.
