Recall: ProtiDiet Protein Chocolate bars

SAINT-EUSTACHE, Quebec, March 20 (UPI) -- A Canadian company is recalling ProtiDiet High Protein Chocolate Dream Bars because the product may contain Salmonella.

The company, located in Saint-Eustache, Quebec, said the product was sold in 210 gram, or 7.4 ounce, packages, seven bars per package, bearing UPC 6 21498 42238 1, lot code CR 18 13B, and best before date of August 2015.

The product was distributed in Alabama, Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Florida, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas and Virginia. It was also sold via the Internet, the company said.

The Food and Drug Administration, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and Pro-Amino International are warning people not to consume these high protein bars, which may contain Salmonella. No illnesses have been reported at this time.

Healthy people infected with Salmonella may experience some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Although rare, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments including arterial infections; endocarditis, or inflammation of the lining of the heart; arthritis; muscle pain; eye irritation and urinary tract symptoms.

Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with the Pro-Amino product subject to this recall should contact their healthcare provider immediately, the agencies said. There have been no illnesses reported at this time.

Consumers should avoid eating the bars, discard them or return it to the point of sale, the company said.
