N.Y. Medicaid paid execs $500,000 each

WASHINGTON, Feb. 18 (UPI) -- Fifteen New York state non-profit group executives whose main clients were on Medicaid had yearly compensation exceeding $500,000, federal officials said.

The U.S. House Oversight and Government Reform Committee also found 100 non-profit executives made more than $200,000 a year -- and the findings don't cover all Medicaid-funded non-profits serving the developmentally disabled, the elderly, the disabled and the poor, around the state.

The committee culled salary information from publicly available Form 990s and the non-profit reports filed with the Internal Revenue Service.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo recently issued an executive order capping executive salaries at $199,000 for most contractors doing business with more than a dozen state agencies, the report said.

The report, "Billions of Federal Tax Dollars Misspent on New York's Medicaid Program," also said New York's per resident Medicaid spending was nearly double that of California or the national average for the United States.

In fiscal year 2010, New York's $2,700 per resident Medicaid spending exceeded per capita Medicaid spending in the rest of the country by more than $1,500. For Medicaid, New York pays half of the cost and the federal government pays the other half.
