BURLINGTON, Ontario, Jan. 7 (UPI) -- A Canadian and U.S. company says it is reselling stair lifts, wheelchair lifts, ramps and other in-home medical equipment to families who care for the elderly.

Silver Cross, a North American healthcare franchise devoted to recycling accessibility and mobility equipment, has 15 locations throughout Canada and four locations in the United States.

"By helping families find lower-cost alternatives for in-home medical equipment, our franchisees have helped thousands of people with disabilities and other physical limitation challenges maintain their lifestyle in their own homes," Bob Harvey, chief executive officer and founder of Silver Cross, said in a statement. "Given the rise in the aging population and increasing factors that make consumers pay more out-of-pocket for medical expenses, recycling quality healthcare products just makes sense."

Harvey noted 10,000 U.S. baby boomers are becoming seniors every day.

The demand for low-cost solutions for in-home medical equipment will only increase, as hospitals throughout North America increasingly implement "Quicker & Sicker" patient discharges, as healthcare costs rise and as public and private insurance coverage shrinks, Harvey added.
