BROOKS, Alberta, Oct. 21 (UPI) -- About 1.3 million pounds of XL Foods frozen beef tainted by E. coli was being buried in a landfill in western Canada, the landfill's manager says.
The Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported the beef products sent to the dump in Brooks, Alberta, under the watch of Canadian Food Inspection Agency officials so far was mostly ground beef and trimmings.
Newell County landfill manager Ray Juska told the news network the meat was being covered with dirt "to keep out vectors, primarily seagulls is what we have here, and it's also a requirement of the CFIA so nobody can go back and help themselves to some off-spec meat."
The CBC said it was not clear how much beef XL Foods will have to get rid of as it works to earn back its license to operate its Brooks facility.
The E.coli outbreak traced to XL Foods has resulted in the recall of 1,800 products.
