Peanut butter recall expanded back to 2010

WASHINGTON, Oct. 5 (UPI) -- Sunland, which recalled 101 products for possible Salmonella, expanded its recall to all products made in its U.S. plant after March 1, 2010, officials say.

The food manufacturer is voluntarily expanding the recall to cover all products manufactured in its Peanut Butter Plant because the products have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, the frail or the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems.

None of the 139 products added to the recall have been associated with any reported illness to date, but Sunland initiated the recall Sept. 24 after receiving a report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration that from June 11 to Sept. 2, 29 people reported Salmonella Bredeney PFGE, matching illnesses in approximately 18 states.

As of Sept. 25, the CDC reported 30 illnesses in Arizona, California, Connecticut, Illinois, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas, Virginia and Washington.

All products with best-if-used-by dates of March 1, 2011, or later should be returned or discarded immediately, Sunland officials said.
