Romaine lettuce recalled in Canada

OTTAWA, Aug. 18 (UPI) -- Canadian food inspectors are warning people not to eat U.S.-grown Tanimura & Antle brand romaine lettuce because it may be contaminated with E. coli bacteria.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency said no illnesses had been reported as a result of the lettuce, which was distributed in Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia, Nunavut and Yukon, and was sold in one-head packages at retail Aug. 8-17.

The agency said on its Web site that the lettuce's package bears the UPC 0 27918 20314 9. The Canadian distributors are voluntarily recalling the lettuce. The amount of lettuce included in the recall or where in the United States it was grown was not provided by the agency.

The agency said food contaminated with E. coli O157:H7 may not look or smell spoiled. Eating food tainted by the bacteria my cause serious and potentially life-threatening illnesses. Symptoms include severe abdominal pain and bloody diarrhea.
