First gulf organ donation forum to start

DAMMAM, Saudi Arabia, May 29 (UPI) -- Officials confirm the first Persian Gulf organ-donor management conference will take place this week in Dammam, Saudi Arabia.

Organized by the Saudi center for organ transplantation, the University of Dammam, Dammam medical complex and Eithar -- a non-profit organization -- the conference set for Wednesday aims at promoting organ donations and organ transplant techniques throughout the gulf region.

The Saudi Gazette said Tuesday experts and surgeons from different parts of the world will participate in the conference to share their knowledge and expertise with local surgeons, while enhancing a common medical strategy for the region and provide training.

Dr. Abdul Aziz al-Turki -- founder of Eithar -- was quoted by Saudi Gazette as saying, "This will be the first international conference co-sponsored by Eithar, and it will help the organization move towards building stronger links with its key stakeholders -- organ donors, and the medical profession. We plan to organize a similar event every two years to stay abreast of the latest developments in the field."

The Saudi Gazette said Tuesday several medical researchers already hailed the initiative, stressing it would help member countries coordinate their organ donors list and enhance patient care.
