116 infected in U.S. with Salmonella

ATLANTA, April 12 (UPI) -- U.S. health officials reported 116 people were infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Bareilly in 20 states and the District of Columbia.

Officials at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta said they were working with the Food and Drug Administration and public health officials in several states, but the investigation had not conclusively identified a food source.

The 16 new cases are from Florida (1), Georgia (1), Illinois (1), Maryland (1), Massachusetts (4), Missouri (1), New York (1), Pennsylvania (2), Rhode Island (1), and Wisconsin (3), said a report by the CDC said.

The number of ill persons identified in each state is as follows: Alabama (2), Arkansas (1), Connecticut (5), District of Columbia (2), Florida (1), Georgia (5), Illinois (10), Louisiana (2), Maryland (11), Massachusetts (8), Mississippi (1), Missouri (2), New Jersey (7), New York (24), North Carolina (2), Pennsylvania (5), Rhode Island (5), South Carolina (3), Texas (3), Virginia (5) and Wisconsin (12), the CDC said.

To date, 12 people have been hospitalized, but no deaths were reported.

Salmonella Bareilly is an unusual serotype of salmonella and state public health officials have been interviewing ill people to obtain information about foods they might have eaten and other exposures in the week prior to illness, CDC officials said.
