STOCKHOLM, Denmark, March 15 (UPI) -- The Danish National Board of Health linked two managing directors of a Danish wholesaler with a company that shipped a fake cancer drug to the United States.

The Wall Street Journal said the counterfeit version of Avastin prompted an investigation by law enforcement and regulators in both the United States and Europe.

The Danish national health board Thursday said two unnamed managing directors of the Danish company CareMed ApS ran a company called Swan Medicare ApS in 2007. Officials revoked the license of Swan Medicare for violating Danish laws regulating the importation of drugs from outside the European Union or European Economic Area.

CareMed recently admitted it bought and sold medicines that turned out to be knockoffs of the Roche Holding AG cancer drug Avastin 400mg/16mL.

Counterfeit drugs reached medical clinics in the United States, but it was not determined whether any patients received the fake medication, the Journal said.
