Suit claims doctor removed healthy ovary

BALTIMORE, Sept. 27 (UPI) -- A Maryland woman has filed a lawsuit against an Ellicott City obstetrician, accusing her of wrongly removing a healthy ovary, documents show.

The suit by Nadege Neim, 31, alleges Dr. Maureen Muoneke of Women's Care LLC removed a healthy ovary and fallopian tube on the Neim's right side when she was supposed to excise a cyst on the left, The Baltimore Sun reported Monday.

The suit seeking unspecified damages claims Muoneke operated on the wrong body part, neglected to get Neim's consent for any removal and caused damage to her marriage.

"I feel so violated," the Burtonsville woman said in a statement issued through her attorney.

Neim was pregnant in June of 2009 and received an ultrasound from Muoneke that revealed a mass on her left ovary that Muoneke diagnosed as a "dermoid cyst," a typically benign tumor.

Another ultrasound in 2010 showed the cyst still present and Muoneke recommended its removal, the lawsuit says.

During the procedure "Dr. Muoneke inappropriately and negligently failed to attempt to only remove the cyst and instead removed Mrs. Neim's entire right ovary and fallopian tube," the suit alleges.

Muoneke could not be reached for comment, the Sun said.
