Redheaded sperm donors need not apply

AARHUS, Denmark, Sept. 18 (UPI) -- Officials at an international sperm bank based in Denmark say it is being pickier about how many redheaded donors it allows to donate sperm.

Ole Schou, director of Cryos International, a worldwide network of sperm banks and distributors of clinical sperm related products, said there has been an increase in donations of sperm in recent years -- most likely due to the bad economy -- and there are too many sperm donors who have red hair, The Daily Telegraph reported.

Schou says there are too many redheads in the system already to meet the current demand for people requesting sperm from redheads -- except from Ireland. In Ireland, sperm from redheads sells like "hot cakes," the British newspaper says.

Unless a woman has red hair or is partial to red hair, or a man, who is part of a couple, has red hair, most sperm buyers are not apt to request red hair, Schou says.

Cryos says it supplies high-quality, frozen tested donor semen to more than 65 countries. It pays up to $500 for sperm, but there is currently a waiting list for new donor applicants.

What is in demand is sperm from men who have brown hair and brown eyes -- the sperm bank has lots of customers in Spain, Italy and Greece.
