Survey: One-third in U.S. can't cook

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif., Sept. 12 (UPI) -- Nutritionists urge people to cook meals at home to control portion size, fat and salt, but a U.S. survey indicates nearly a third of U.S. adults don't cook.

A national survey by Impulse Research on behalf of Bosch home appliances, indicates 28 percent are staying out of the kitchen because they say they do not know how to cook.

"It's surprising that even with all the technological advancements in appliances and a more mainstream foodie culture, Americans are still staying out of the kitchen," Micaela Shaw, brand manager for Bosch home appliances, said in a statement.

The survey also indicates more than half of U.S. adults do not cook at home because their spouse of partner does most of the cooking.

Twenty-five percent of the respondents said they don't cook because they do not want to clean up the mess after cooking while 21 percent said they don't have enough time.

Another reason Americans may choose to eat out rather than cook: 66 percent said shopping for groceries takes the most time out of various household chores, including cooking and washing dishes.

The survey of of 1,087 men and women age 25 and older was conducted in April. No margin of error was provided.
