FDA panel: Kid acetaminophen label changes

WASHINGTON, May 18 (UPI) -- Pediatric doses of acetaminophen -- Tylenol -- should be based on a child's weight first, then age, a U.S. Food and Drug Administration advisory panel advises.

The FDA advisory panel also recommends that infant acetaminophen should be labeled only for fever reduction in children age 2 and under, but labels may recommend acetaminophen for both fever and pain in children age 2 and older, WebMD reported.

The panel also advises the FDA to:

-- Require infant acetaminophen bottles have instructions for children ages 6 months to 2 years. Current labels warn parents of the danger of fever in children age 2 and under and instruct them to call a doctor.

-- Require liquid acetaminophen manufacturers to make it harder for children to take an accidental overdose.

-- Require liquid acetaminophen bottles to be accompanied with measuring devices clearly marked in milliliters.

-- Require all pill forms of acetaminophen for children to come in the same concentration.
