NEW YORK, May 11 (UPI) -- A shortage of the generic drug used for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder has patients hunting to fill prescriptions, healthcare officials say.
Shire Pharmaceuticals, which manufactures the brand name Adderall XR is under contract to provide the generic form of the drug to Teva Pharmaceuticals and Impax Laboratories, but the two companies say Shire has not provided enough of the drug, ABC-TV News reported.
In turn, Shire says it has provided the amount agreed to and that any shortage is caused by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.
However, the DEA denies imposing restrictions that would affect supply, ABC-TV News says.
Nonetheless, some patients say they have been searching from pharmacy to pharmacy to get their regular generic version of the drug, or even the brand name of the drug, which helps people with ADHD to focus.
