TORONTO, April 29 (UPI) -- The thyroid drug levothyroxine has been linked to an increased risk of fracture in older patients, researchers in Canada said.
Dr. Marci R. Turner of the University of Toronto and colleagues say the study involved 213,511 patients age 70 or older who were dispensed at least one prescription for levothyroxine between April 1, 2002, and March 31, 2007. Hospital records were used to identify fractures. These patients were matched with up to five controls from within the group who had not yet experienced a fracture.
The sample was defined as current users of levothyroxine, recent past users or discontinued users.
The study, published in the British Medical Journal, finds 10.4 percent of patients were treated with at least one fracture during the study period.
"Among adults age 70 or older, current levothyroxine treatment was associated with a significantly increased risk of fracture, with a strong dose-response relation," the study authors say in a statement. "Ongoing monitoring of levothyroxine dose is important to avoid over-treatment in this population."
