MONTREAL, April 9 (UPI) -- Researchers in Montreal say unemployment can lead to a shorter life, particularly among men.
The findings, analyzing 40 years of data from millions of people in 15 countries published in the Journal of Social Science & Medicine, strongly suggest men are particularly affected.
"We suspect that even today, not having a job is more stressful for men than for women," Eran Shor, a sociology professor at McGill University in Montreal, told USA Today.
The study found sustained unemployment raises the risk of premature death by 63 percent. The risk is increased 78 percent for men compared with 37 percent for women.
