Study: Love main source of regret in U.S.

CHICAGO, March 25 (UPI) -- Love is the chief source of regret for Americans, followed by family relations, education and career, a survey found.

The findings come from a phone survey asking adults to describe one thing they regretted in detail, the Chicago Tribune reported Wednesday.

The study, to be published in the journal Social Psychological and Personality Science, found the sexes to be divided on love and work regrets.

Women were found to have more regrets about romance than men, at 44 percent versus 19 percent, while men had more work-oriented regrets than women -- 34 percent compared to 27 percent.

Individuals who were not currently in a relationship were most likely to have romance regrets, the survey by researchers at Northwestern University and the University of Illinois found.

Individuals with low levels of education were likely to regret their lack of education while Americans with high levels of education had the most career-related regrets, they said.
