Anterior hip replacement: Quicker recovery

NEW YORK, March 14 (UPI) -- A New York surgeon says a revolutionary hip replacement technique -- anterior hip replacement -- offers a quicker recovery and less invasive treatment.

Dr. Michael Bronson, chief of joint replacement surgery at Mount Sinai hospital, says in comparison with current hip replacement methods, the anterior surgery will provide many benefits, including a quicker recovery, no muscle cutting and less post operation restrictions.

"I'm thrilled to offer this extraordinary surgery to our patients at the Joint Replacement Center," Bronson says in a statement. "Nearly 400,000 Americans received hip replacement devices in 2010. This revolutionary technique has the potential to help thousands of people improve the quality of their lives while not disrupting their daily normal routines as a result of a shorter recovery and rehabilitation process."

The anterior hip replacement surgery allows the surgeon to reach the hip joint from the front of the hip, as opposed to the side or the posterior approach, so the hip can be replaced without detachment of muscle from the pelvis or femur.

The most important muscles for hip function, the gluteal muscles -- the three muscles that attach to the pelvis and femur and make up the buttocks -- are left undisturbed and do not require healing.
