CHICAGO, Feb. 28 (UPI) -- A Web site has been created to make it easier to learn if a doctor is U.S. board certified by The American Board of Medical Specialties, the medical group says.
The site was developed by the board, which covers more than 750,000 physicians it has certified in one or more of its 149 specialties and sub-specialties.
The site is designed to be a one-stop, easy-to-use resource where people can also learn about what ABMS member board certification means, why it's important and why "certification matters" to their health, the medical group says.
"Today's patients take an active role in their own healthcare decisions," Dr. Kevin B. Weiss, the board's president and chief executive officer, says in a statement.
"Board certification shows the public that a doctor has met the qualifications to provide quality care in a given specialty. Board certification by an ABMS member board is considered the 'gold standard' because of its credibility and the rigorous processes involved. CertificationMatters.org offers the public a resource that includes the information they need to help receive the best healthcare possible."
The Web site also includes tips and suggestions on finding a qualified doctor and guidance for getting the most out of doctor visits.
