STOCKHOLM, Sweden, Feb. 20 (UPI) -- In Sweden, people age 15 and older consume an average of almost 10 quarts of pure alcohol, a year, researchers at Stockholm University say.
The researchers at The Center for Social Research on Alcohol and Drugs at Stockholm University say there was a decrease in national drinking consumption of 8 ounces of pure alcohol from 2008 to 2010.
"The decline in the total alcohol consumption which was noted nationally during 2009 covers the whole country as a result of a reduction of imports and smuggling," the Web site thelocal.se reported.
However, in real terms the average Swede in 2010 drank about 5 quarts of spirits, about 30 quarts of wine, some 70 medium strength beers and about 3 quarts of cider and mixed drinks, the researchers say.
Despite the current decline, Swedes on average are drinking some 15 percent to 20 percent more alcohol than they did in the 1990s, the report said.
