INDIO, Calif., Dec. 17 (UPI) -- Residents in a Southern California town have been warned not to drink tap water after tests showed it to be contaminated and a risk to health, authorities said.

Riverside County health officials said analysis showed the water had elevated levels of perchlorate, a chemical used in rocket fuel and munitions, the Los Angeles Times reported Thursday.

The contaminate was found in water supplied by the Boe del Heights Mutual Water Co. to about 120 homes in a neighborhood near Indio, Calif.

Department of Environmental Health officials warned residents not to drink the water or use it for making infant formula.

The water still may be used for showers and bathing, officials said, but they recommended the use of bottled water for preparing food.

The county has been in touch with the Indio Water Authority so see if the neighborhood could be served by a temporary emergency connection to that agency's water supply, authorities said.
