DETROIT, Nov. 19 (UPI) -- Pertussis, or whooping cough, is on the rise in Michigan despite efforts to increase vaccination rates among the most susceptible, health authorities said.
The state recorded 1,305 confirmed and suspected cases by last week, the highest number in years and more than four times the 315 cases logged in 2008, the Detroit Free Press reported.
Health officials cited waning immunity and low vaccination rates as factors in the outbreak, noting just 46 percent of the state's teenagers received the recommended booster shot this summer.
Several other states have reported similar increases and at least 10 infant deaths in California have been blamed on the disease.
National efforts are under way to get adults immunized, especially parents, caregivers, teachers and anyone around children, Jeff Dimond, a spokesman with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said.
A CDC advisory panel recommended that senior citizens also receive a pertussis vaccine.
