HOUSTON, Nov. 19 (UPI) -- A U.S. expert in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis questions reports Lou Gehrig actually suffered from head trauma.
Dr. Stanley Appel says there is no scientific evidence to support the claim repetitive head trauma -- chronic traumatic encephalomyopathy -- caused the progressive nerve damage, muscle weakness and eventual paralysis associated with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease.
Appel of Methodist Hospital in Houston says media coverage of the 12-patient study suggesting baseball player Lou Gehrig's disease was caused by head trauma has resulted in some ALS patients believing they may be misdiagnosed.
"We want to make it clear to physicians and their ALS patients that reports of Lou Gehrig succumbing to anything but the disease which bears his name are inaccurate," Appel says in a statement.
Appel and colleagues have authored an editorial, published in Muscle & Nerve, that aims to dispel doubts of Lou Gehrig's ALS diagnosis.
