ATLANTA, Oct. 14 (UPI) -- Fifteen members have been asked to serve on the Advisory Committee on Breast Cancer in Young Women, U.S. health officials said Thursday.
The Affordable Care Act charges the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta with the responsibility of developing initiatives to increase knowledge of breast health and breast cancer among women, particularly those age 40 and under and those at increased breast cancer risk.
"The Advisory Committee on Breast Cancer in Young Women will consist of external experts and stakeholders who will assist CDC in developing evidence-based approaches to advance understanding and awareness of breast cancer among young women," Dr. Thomas R. Frieden, director of the CDC, says in a statement.
Those asked to serve on the committee include:
-- Dr. Ann H. Partridge of the Harvard Medical School and director of the Breast Oncology Center at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
-- Dr. Otis Webb Brawley, chief medical officer for the American Cancer Society.
-- Melissa Watson, a 38 year-old breast cancer survivor from Des Moines, Iowa.
-- Dr. Generosa Grana, director of the Cooper Cancer Institute and the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.
-- Dr. Brandin Hayes-Lattin, medical director of the Knight Cancer Institute Adolescent and Young Adult Oncology Program at Oregon Health and Science University.
-- Maimah Karmo, founder and president of Tigerlily Foundation and a three-year breast cancer survivor.
-- Karen Kelly-Thomas, chief executive officer of the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners.
