Nepal suffers outbreak of dengue fever

KATHMANDU, Nepal, Sept. 25 (UPI) -- The number of people in Nepal infected with dengue fever is increasing as the disease spreads in the central region of the country, officials say.

Viral dengue fever, leptospirosis and H1N1 influenza have created a health crisis in the country's Chitwan district, China's official state-run news agency Xinhua reported Saturday.

The onslaught of diseases has claimed 19 lives in Chitwan in two months.

The Epidemiology and Disease Control Division of Nepal's Department of Health Services says it will establish a special fever clinic in the Chitwan district's main hospital.

Among those suffering from dengue fever was a senior doctor in the district who was brought to Kathmandu for treatment, Xinhua reported.

The Rising Nepal newspaper reported that although government containment efforts were ongoing in the area, the disease was not yet under control.
