Boomers won't have retirement like parents

LEICESTER, England, March 29 (UPI) -- A British researcher advises aging baby boomers to view the future positively and expect to keep working rather than retire.

John Benyon of the University of Leicester says as pensions increasingly become obsolete, 65-year-olds of the future will be expected to continue working past the traditional retirement age.

In an article published in the April issue of Political Insight, Benyon suggests retirees of the future need to be financially and legally informed and should thoroughly research their consumer decisions.

Benyon says aging boomers who try to understand social, political and technological changes will feel less overwhelmed or isolated and will fare better. One current unmet need, he says, is educational opportunities for older people.

"In our research, we identify the various issues that come with a larger population of older people, and suggest solutions to key policy questions in order to promote stronger, cohesive communities," Benyon says in a statement. "Many older people continue to play a positive role in the community through dedicated volunteering. We hope that in the future they can take an even bigger role, and even be elected to local office more commonly."
