
NEW YORK, Feb. 26 (UPI) -- A New York physician says walking sideways up and down inclines can prevent falling in icy, snowy conditions.
Dr. Ronald Grelsamer, a hip and knee specialist in Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, says no technique is 100 percent effective for getting around safely in cold, wintry conditions but there are ways to help prevent injuries.
Among his suggestions:
-- When going down or up an incline, consider turning sideways. Do not cross one foot over the other, as you will have no balance while your feet are crossed. If the ground is steep, bend your knees.
-- Move your feet ever so slightly apart as you walk. This will give you better balance. If the street is very slippery, bend your knees a little bit.
-- Don't forget to protect your dominant arm. A fall occurs very quickly, but one recommendation is to grab hold of the lapel of your coat with your dominant hand, which instinctively leaves the other one to break your fall. If you are carrying something, do so with the dominant hand. Again, instinctively you will then use the weaker hand to brace yourself, should you fall.

A black bear didn't go over a river but went to the woods after scampering through residential and industrial areas of Anchorage, Alaska, police said.
