INDIANAPOLIS, Feb. 12 (UPI) -- The Olympics can motivate couch potatoes to embrace a sport or others to step up their exercise regimen, but an athletic trainer warns not to over do.
Ralph Reiff, an athletic trainer and director of St. Vincent Sports Performance in Indianapolis, says with the Super Bowl fresh in people's minds and the Olympics beginning people are often inspired to play pick up-ball, master the moguls, savor the snowboard or perfect their figure eights.
"Identifying a role model is always a positive way to set your sights on new goals," Reiff says in a statement.
"But it is also important to remember the pros have trained and worked on their mental and physical abilities for years -- and sometimes a lifetime."
For those who are eager to take on a new physical challenge, or improve your current routine, the National Athletic Trainers' Association recommends:
-- Consult a physician and get a pre-participation exam to ensure you are in appropriate shape.
-- Consider a gradual introduction to activity with the help of a physician, athletic trainer or other medical professional.
-- Establish both short-term and long-term goals.
-- Select a sport that you really enjoy or have always wanted to try.
