Parental lapses adding to child obesity

BOCA RATON, Fla., Feb. 2 (UPI) -- A U.S. doctor says many parents are too passive about their children's food choices.

Dr. Sasson Moulavi, a Florida physician board-certified in bariatric medicine says this lapse in parenting is contributing to the U.S. epidemic in child obesity.

Moulavi says parents need to respond in a meaningful way if making healthier food choices elicits aggressive, degrading speeches from their kids. Parents should teach their children about good nutrition, healthier food choices and how to compare calories, fat, sugars and sodium.

"Arm them with information for them to be in control. Rarely will a kid seriously choose something unhealthy when given facts," Moulavi says in a statement. "If they do ... put your foot down and tell them that you will not allow it."
