LONDON, Nov. 26 (UPI) -- Exercising the day after heavy drinking does little to minimize the effects of alcohol, British Public Health Minister Gillian Merron said.

"If you have a big night at the pub, you're not going to compensate with a workout the following day," Merron told The Daily Telegraph.

Nicolay Sorensen, alcohol concern director of policy and communications, agreed.

"It is encouraging that so many heavy drinkers recognize their drinking habits aren't good for them and that they want to make up for it by taking exercise," Sorensen said.

"But people need to be aware that regularly drinking double the recommended limits comes with health risks that can't simply be burned off down the gym, in the pool or on the football pitch."

The Telegraph said results of a YouGov survey indicate 20 percent of people attempt to compensate for heavy drinking by exercising or playing a sport.
