RICHMOND, Va., Oct. 21 (UPI) -- U.S. researchers linked psychiatric disorders and sexual trauma to raised risk of lower urinary tract symptoms.
The study, published online ahead of print of the Journal of Urology, was led by Dr. Adam Klausner of the Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center in Richmond. Klausner and colleagues administered questionnaires to 121 women referred to a specialized urology clinic for evaluation of lower urinary tract symptoms.
The data were then analyzed according to psychiatric co-morbidities, history of sexual trauma, age, race and obstetric history. Baseline incidence of psychiatric co-morbidity and sexual trauma was also compared to a control population of 1,298 women from the Veterans Affairs primary care clinic.
Women referred for evaluation of lower urinary tract symptoms had higher rates of psychiatric co-morbidities, 64.5 percent, and sexual trauma, 49.6 percent, than those in the primary care clinic, 25.9 percent and 20.1, respectively.
